A $3 million modernization of the North and Central Reading Rooms, completed in Fall 2016, has transformed the Frank Melville Jr. Memorial Library into a centralized, interdisciplinary learning environment: a model for the 21st century university campus. The Stony Brook Foundation committed $1 million to this transformative project. The renovations are designed to optimize both collaboration and study opportunities between students and between faculty.

The Best Ideas In Medicine For Children – The New Long Island Children’s Hospital

The expanded Stony Brook Children’s Hospital will be housed in a new 10-level Hospital Pavilion adjacent to Stony Brook University Hospital. The new building will feature a pediatric intensive care unit, adolescent unit, procedure suite, hematology/oncology unit, medical/surgical units, and modern patient and family amenities.

The Knapp Swezey Foundation Children’s Challenge, a $2.5 million matching challenge pledge from the Knapp Swezey Foundation, helped to raise the $5 million needed to complete the $25 million Children’s Hospital Building fund philanthropic goal.

Advancing Cancer Research and Imaging Diagnostics

Devoted to imaging, neurosciences, cancer care and cancer research, the eight-level 240,000-square-foot Medicine and Research Translation (MART) Building and 225,000-square-foot new Bed Tower will enable scientists and physicians to work side by side to advance cancer research and imaging diagnostics.

The MART will include cancer biology oriented wet laboratories for cell, tissue and other cancer biology research, dry labs for statistical research, biomedical informatics and clinical study, as well as a chemistry research lab, conference center and educational space.

As the site of the new outpatient Cancer Center, the MART will allow Stony Brook to deliver cutting-edge cancer care more efficiently and effectively, while doubling its capacity to provide cancer treatment to the people of Long Island.

Addressing the growing housing and dining needs of our students

In September of 2016, César Chávez Hall was opened to students, and Tubman Hall opened in January of 2017. The new residence halls provide 759 additional beds and a 60,000 square feet state-of-the-art dining facility for Stony Brook University students, staff and faculty. The Halls offer additional residential options for upperclassman and bring the total on-campus housing inventory to more than 10,300 beds, making Stony Brook University the largest campus housing program in SUNY.

Building a foundation for research and development partnerships

The Research and Development Park at Stony Brook University covers 246 acres containing three existing buildings. The University has started developing the Research and Development Campus, anchored by the Center for Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology (CEWIT) and the Advanced Energy Center. The Research and Development Campus will be an extension of the University’s world-renowned research arm.

Conserving our oceans and clean water

Stony Brook University’s School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS) is on the forefront of marine research on the east end of Long Island with its new 15,000-square foot, two-story Marine Sciences Center located on its Southampton campus.

Already home to cutting edge and internationally recognized research on harmful algal blooms, ocean acidification, seagrasses, shellfish and ocean acoustics, this new facility has greatly expanded the research capabilities of SoMAS in Southampton.

These expanded abilities ultimately benefit Long Island and its coastal ecosystems as a majority of the research in Southampton focuses on our local bays, harbors and estuaries.

Transforming the lives of student-athletes

A new state-of-the-art indoor practice facility will allow all Stony Brook intercollegiate athletic teams to have a place to practice and train all year round. The $5 million Dubin family pledge in the form of a 1:1 matching challenge grant sets the stage for meeting the $10 million fundraising goal toward this facility.

The facility will feature a 100-yard indoor multi-purpose synthetic turf practice field, and the design includes innovative lighting, filming equipment, sound and video systems, and a 90-foot ceiling clearance height; it will also contain support facilities including restrooms and storage.

Engaging faculty and alumni

The relationships formed between students and faculty are profound for everyone involved. But how can we extend that creative, collaborative spirit beyond the classroom experience?

The University Center for Faculty and Alumni will give faculty a place outside the classroom for sharing ideas with colleagues across departments, and alumni will also gain a home base on campus to encourage ongoing engagement with the Stony Brook community.

Transforming education and research with high performance computing

Supercomputers play an ever increasing role in cross-disciplinary research, and the use of high performance computers is changing the way science gets its answers, industry develops products and society analyzes its needs. The interdisciplinary Institute for Advanced Computational Science (IACS), working closely with Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) and the Computational Science Center, will further cultivate cutting-edge academic and industry collaboration and pool the power of its computer resources together to transform research in many fields of society.

The IACS will install a second high performance computer system during the first half of 2016, building upon the University’s computational capacity and big data analyses in research and education initiatives encompassing all fields. The first was completed in October 2015 and unveiled during the IACS grand opening.

The new high performance computer cluster will primarily be used to support education and research at Stony Brook University, although a portion of its capacity (up to 30 percent) will be made available for users across the SUNY educational system and regional industries.

Renovating the Pritchard Pool 

The comprehensive $12 million renovation of the Pritchard Pool was completed in May 2017. The renovated University Pool features significant upgrades including a state-of-the-art movable floor in the shallow end, an enhanced automated mechanical system that includes remote monitoring to aid in pool maintenance, and an updated HVAC system with multi-season climate control and a dehumidification system. This facility will be the new home of the Women’s Swimming and Diving team, reinstated for the 2017-18 academic year, headed by Coach Janelle Atkinson, a two-time Olympian. The project was supported by an anonymous $2 million gift to Stony Brook University.
