47,961 Donors Contributed to the Largest Fundraising Campaign in SUNY History
Stony Brook University has concluded the most successful fundraising effort in SUNY history. Over the past seven years, The Campaign for Stony Brook raised $630.7 million from 47,961 friends, alumni, foundations and corporations, exceeding the $600 million goal by five percent.
Designed to strengthen areas of strategic importance to the University, the focus of the Campaign for Stony Brook was to raise funds for financial aid and endowed chairs and professorships to attract and retain the best students and faculty; for research investments to accelerate productivity and new discoveries; and for interdisciplinary academic programs and facilities.
“Philanthropy, and the generosity of our donors, provides the margin of excellence for an R1, AAU public research university like Stony Brook, during a time when state support is waning and more and more students are seeking access to excellence,” said President Samuel L. Stanley Jr. “The Campaign for Stony Brook dramatically underscores the importance and impact of philanthropy across our campus and I am extremely grateful to my fellow campaign leaders, and to those who contributed the extra resources we need to continue to educate and prepare the leaders of tomorrow.”
More.
The last day of The Campaign for Stony Brook — June 30, 2018 — is just 71 days from now. To date, more than 47,000 donors have committed over $585 million in gifts and pledges to the Campaign.
Thanks to these generous donors — including you and thousands of our fellow University employees and students — we are poised to meet our $600 million goal, completing the most ambitious fundraising effort in SUNY history. (Visit stonybrook.edu/campaign to learn more.)
The response to The Campaign for Stony Brook is a testament to the value of what you do here every day. Your accomplishments — in the classroom, in research and in our community — strengthen our case for support.
The Campaign for Stony Brook has been a momentum builder, positioning Stony Brook for a strong future. Approximately 83% of the dollars raised during the Campaign have already been received and allocated to benefit students, faculty and programs across our University. For example:
As encouraging as these results are, we still have much more to do. Our continued efforts focus on building a comprehensive fundraising program that will support the University’s ambitious mission.
With declining State support, a professional fundraising program is necessary for Stony Brook to compete effectively with our aspirational peers for the top students, faculty and academic programs.
During the past six and a half years, we have re-engineered the entire Advancement division and we have welcomed more veteran fundraising professionals, strengthened accountability, increased alumni services and enhanced donor engagement and stewardship.
I am confident that we now have the fundamental infrastructure in place to support our growing community of committed donors. And I am exceptionally proud of our Advancement and Foundation team members who have worked tirelessly and diligently on behalf of our deserving students, faculty and staff.
While The Campaign for Stony Brook will officially be over on June 30, our work will not end. The next goal is to continue to grow our fundraising program and to position Stony Brook University for its first $1 billion campaign.
Moreover, we aim to create a true culture of philanthropy at Stony Brook. We are determined to continue working at the highest possible level of professionalism and productivity to translate those successes into charitable support, the driving force behind our future achievements together.
Thank you for all that you do every day for Stony Brook. As always, we are most grateful for your partnership.
Sincerely Yours,
Dexter A. Bailey Jr.
